Reading Whyte will certainly shake up your head, and have you nodding, too. I've heard his interview by Krista Tippett, host of "On Being" [onbeing(dot)org], and at times I can hear his mixed brogue in my head as I read. Aside from that, he has a way of putting things that, for me, goes beyond simple metaphor, making what he says reach more deeply into my own experience. There are phrases that have me agreeing, while being swept by goosebumps at just how profound they are. There are others that, through his metaphoric linkages, have me "scratching my head" & re-reading, certain that there's gold in there, somewhere. (There usually is.)Honestly, I read 3 or more of these short essays a night as I settled into bed. Rather than just "lull me to bye", they moved me to a quite real place that was neither purely emotional, nor lofty beauty, but a mix that I call "heart". I'd drift off to sleep as if I had done a good day's honest work... engaged in the mystery & satisfied.Consolations there may be, here, but that title barely does this book justice.

David Whyte is one of the most brilliant author, poet, and speakers out in the world presently. I continue to be amazed and enthralled with his vision and voice. I cherish everything that I read and hear from his vast collections of books and recordings.

Wow! If you find it hard to conceive how a book with ruminations about different random words could be this good, you should read this book. I have always loved how words have connotations. This book explores the depth of a word, often finding its spiritual nature. Reading it was like finding a rare plant or flower in the woods and contemplating it. A delight.

David Whyte is a beautiful writer whose philosophy encourages embodied, in-the-moment being. If you're a fan of Pema Chodron or Thich Nhat Hanh, you may also like Whyte. I'm flabbergasted that more physical book stores do not carry his work. Thank goodness for Amazon.com. If you want to get a good idea of the man, I recommend finding the episode of On Being in which Krista Tippett interviews him. It's just lovely.

David Whyte and Mary Oliver are my two favorite writers. Both express the wonder of life through poetry that integrates the natural word with our human experience. "Consolations" for me was another side of David Whyte presented as poetry through prose with a wondrous structure. I could explore feeling states like Honesty, friendship, Maturity, Giving, or Heartbeak through stand-alone chapters. Joy and Gratitude were most heartfelt and soulful. You will soon seek out "Pilgrim" and "River Flow" among his other writings.

Love this book. David’s ability with words is quite incredible. I love the fact one can dip into the word of an emotion or situation. His pieces on grief, friendship, solace and loneliness have been incredibly meaningful, insightful and reassuring.

An astounding book for the breadth and depth of meaning Whyte provides. Whyte brings a keen and heartfelt intelligence to every day words- a thoughtful, insightful rendering of a true love of common words- articulating the edges of meaning I had only been able to grope, grasp or sense. For me, he was as much a guide of kinesthetic intelligence, his words reshaping my perceptions of words. (In fact, the dedication page is itself beautiful. Has anyone ever dedicated a work to words, let alone their beckoning uncertainties?) Common words are so much more mysterious now, a point of wondering. I have returned time and again in search of his extrapolation of a word which has been on my mind. Not only does this speak to the power of the work, for this volume has changed my relationship with words, but it makes me long for the next, and the next, and the next volume. Providing depth of purpose and meaning to words we use everyday. Stunning in its simplicity, but revered for its depth and meaning. I have one copy at my bedside, and one in my bag.

About the Author

Harry I. Wolk (1930-2009) held a BS in economics from the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania and MBA and PhD degrees from Michigan State University. He was the author or co-author of approximately 25 journal articles, including publications in the Accounting Review, Journal of Accounting Research, Accounting Horizons, and the International Journal of Accounting. He was the lead author of seven editions of Accounting Theory: Conceptual Issues in a Political and Economic Environment. He previously taught at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee and was the Aliber Distinguished Professor of Accounting at Drake University, where he taught for 32 years. He also visited Creighton University, where he was John P. Begley Professor of Accounting. He was a member of the American Accounting Association and Financial Executives International, where he served as president of the Iowa Chapter. Outside of accounting, his interests were in following national and world affairs closely, listening to classical music, and following the fortunes of the Boston Red Sox, Boston Celtics, and the New England Patriots.

James L. Dodd, Professor Emeritus of Accounting at Drake University, holds a BS in accounting from California State University–Fresno, an MBA from the University of South Alabama, and a PhD from the University of Georgia, with a major in accounting and a minor in information systems. Before entering academe, Dr. Dodd worked for 15 years in the shipbuilding, aircraft-engine, and diesel-engine filtration industries. His assignments at Litton, Teledyne, and Cummins included experience in industrial engineering, capital budgeting, profit planning, product pricing, cost accounting, long-range systems planning, and accounting controllerships at plant and corporate levels. He is a Fulbright Scholar alumnus, participating in academic exchanges with Norway (1999–2000) and Iceland (2007). His teaching and research include areas in accounting theory, fraud examination, and international accounting. On a personal level, he enjoys working with his hands, listening to bluegrass music, watching SEC sports, and volunteering as an AARP-IRS tax aide. He is a Southerner, born in Birmingham, Alabama, married to his college sweetheart for 48+ years; he has one daughter and two grandchildren.

John J. Rozycki, Associate Professor of Finance at Drake University, holds a BS in biology from King’s College, an MBA from the University of Scranton, and a PhD from Penn State University, with a major in finance. Before pursuing his doctoral education, Dr. Rozycki worked in the health care planning and telecommunications industries. He teaches corporate finance and equity valuation. His professional interests are in equity and business valuation, corporate capital allocation decisions, financial planning, financing decisions, and financial statement analysis. He is a member of the CFA Institute, the CFA Society of Iowa, the Financial Management Association, and the Midwest Finance Association. He is a CFA charterholder. He was born in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, and is married with two sons. He is active in his church and enjoys the outdoors.

Jensen is one of the real pros in IT today going far beyond his extensive technical abilities and knowledge of contemporary programming. Jensen can actually COMMUNICATE clearly, effectively and thoroughly. His communication skills are outstanding and this combination of technical expertise and communication skills makes him unique in the modern IT world where it seems that all tutorials, demos and "white papers" are written for an audience with a nearly zero attention span. True, you have to stay awake and pay attention when you read Jensen's writing, but the rewards for your efforts are far greater than the effort it takes to gain them. We need more like Cary Jensen in IT; I wish we could clone him.

A good revision to an already very useful book. Happily, Jensen does not again use the BDE (which I felt was a mistake in the earlier volume, despite his reasoning.) The discussion of the ClientDataset benefits, as well, from the addition of FireDAC to the mix. They are similar, but different, and comparing them helps to illuminate the benefits of both.

I left Delphi and C++ Builder long ago, then when I had to program an application resulted that BDE was no longer supported, and the documentation and examples I found at that time for dbExpress were so basic and did not solved master details problems I had. I bough this book to address all my doubts, and certainly I think it has helped me a lot.This book does not only shows facts as in the product documentation, it relates the concepts and explain them in detail.Great book, thank you to Cary Jensen

Very informative and deep coverage of ClientDataSets. Everything from searching, filtering, and caching to saving the data locally is covered in this book. In this new world of mobile usage where a connection to the datasource is not always guaranteed, saving the change cache locally, then persisting to the remote database when connected is something that is handled by default by the ClientDataSet. Incredible and relevant technology for today even though it was created and first released in the mid-90's. This book explains ClientDataSets in an easy-to-read format, but it also has really good details that will be of good use to developers who have been using the technology for years. Thanks Cary for the insight and clarity into an amazing technology.

This book attempts a comprehensive look at ClientDataSets, but misses the mark for beginners. The first mistake the author makes is one many, many Delphi books make. The problem can be summarized as follows: "BDE is dead and no one in their right mind would do database development work today using the unsupported dead BDE, but because Delphi has sample BDE databases, I'll use BDE examples throughout."This foolish idea of using a dead-end database structure sounds like a good idea when you hear the author describe it, but it doesn't translate to the new user. An experienced Delphi database developer would likely make the easy leap between how it is done with BDE as opposed to say dbExpress, but the beginner will not. This leaves the beginner lost right out of the gate. Trying to teach myself Delphi database programming, I wasted 20 hours tinkering just to figure out one simple mistake I was making while trying to recreate the books examples using mySQL and dbExpress. Granted the book cannot cover every database back-end and access method available, but starting with any of the non-dead options translates much easier to the other modern options than BDE. The author should have picked ADO, dbExpress, or even Interbase and used a real RDBMS back-end.The second mistake the author makes is relying too heavily on the downloadable code examples rather than placing code examples directly in the book. This not only wastes a great deal of time flipping back and forth, but the downloaded code often doesn't show enough to be useful. Practical examples would do things every database programmer would do in a basic database app. Instead many of the downloaded code examples are simply 4 components strung together using their properties in an empty shell application. Yes the app displays data, but does nothing useful. Complete examples showing how to add, delete, edit, search for, lock, unlock, and avoid collisions with other users using more than dbGrid and a navigation bar would be extremely helpful. As it is, you'd think every database app revolves around dumping unformatted data into a dbGrid and having the end user hack away at it like a glorified spreadsheet.Again, for the advanced developer needing to fill in a few missing pieces about how ClientDataSets work, I'm sure this book is fine. For the beginner, the book is a nightmare until you've wasted hundreds of hours experimenting your way past basic problems.For the beginner, I'd rate this book 1.5 stars. For the more experienced developers three stars, and for those already doing database work but just needing a few gaps filled in, perhaps a bit higher.

It would be all too easy to overlook the value in the TClientDataSet. This book takes the reader through it in considerable detail. My only complaints are two: the decision to use the BDE, while understandable, was a poor one, and second, the book would benefit from careful proof reading and editing.

I bought this book after buying Delphi XE4 and finding very little detailed information on ClientDataSets on the web. It is a comprehensive book and covers many topics in a clear and concise manner. It helped me to get started with my one-to-many application and gave me ideas about how to structure future projects. It also caused me think "that's an great idea!". The book is obviously very specific (by the nature of its title), but if this is the area you need to get stuck into, you simply cannot do without this book.

This is a great book on ClientDataSets. Even with FireDac more-or-less replacing ClientDataSets, there are enough similarities that this is a good foundation with which to start your FireDac knowledgebase.
